Réunion, also known as La Réunion, is an island in the Indian Ocean southeast of the African mainland with around 860,000 inhabitants. The island, measuring approximately 50 by 70 kilometers, is located around 700 kilometers east of Madagascar and is part of the European Union and an overseas department of France. The official language of the country is French and the euro is used as a means of payment.

The island of Réunion is of volcanic origin with the 3,070 meter high Piton des Neiges as its highest point. The Piton de la Fournaise, which is also high, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world with more than one eruption per year. The island has a tropical, humid summer climate and no place on earth has more rain in one or a few days than Réunion. As a result, the island is hit several times a year, often by small to a few severe cyclones.

The largest cities in the country include Saint-Denis, Saint-Paul, Saint-Pierre, Le Tampon, Saint-Andre, Saint-Louis, Saint-Benoit, Le Port, Saint-Joseph and Sainte-Marie. Almost the entire population is Christian, only a few residents are Muslims or Hindus.

The most important economic sector in Réunion is agriculture, where, among other things, cane sugar, pineapples, bananas, vanilla and lychees are grown. In addition to rum production, the government will focus more on tourism in the future, although this is far behind the neighboring island of Mauritius due to the few beaches.

From a tourist perspective, the island offers a national park, various sandy beaches, alpine mountain terrain, the jungle, several rivers, countless waterfalls, many gardens and parks, the fascinating lava tunnel and some plateaus. In addition to several species of coral, Réunion has a diverse fish and underwater world, such as crabs, starfish, crayfish, tuna, sharks, rays, surgeonfish, sea turtles, marlinfish, butterflyfish, boxfish and perch.

The capital of Réunion is Saint-Denis with around 155,000 inhabitants. Saint-Denis is the largest town on the island and lies directly on the sea in the north. The city's most important sights include the Old Town Hall, the Victory Column, the Roland Garros Monument, the Rue de Paris, the Leon Dierx Museum, the Natural History Museum and the Planetarium.

In September 2019 I visited Réunion for the first time. Immediately after arriving, the island seemed quite European, very clean and well organized. For me, Réunion has the best bus system in the world. You can drive from the airport to the other southern end of the island for just 2 euros. The buses are extremely modern and run on time like Swiss clockwork, you could even think you were in Germany.

The island landscape is wonderful to look at, the beaches and coastal towns on one side, the mountains and volcanoes on the other. In terms of landscape, for me Réunion is the most beautiful of all the islands in the Indian Ocean, but unfortunately the impressive white sandy beaches are missing. The old town of Saint-Denis with its buildings is a great place to spend a full day.

As a main travel destination, La Réunion is probably not suitable for several weeks, but in combination with Mauritius it is definitely worth recommending.
