Cameroon is a country in Central Africa with around 26 million inhabitants. The state borders Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and the Republic of Congo to the south, the Central African Republic to the east, Chad to the northeast, Nigeria to the north and northwest, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The two official languages of Cameroon are French and English and the national currency is the CFA franc BEAC, where 1 euro is equivalent to around 655 XAF.

All major climatic zones and vegetation of the African continent are found in Cameroon, such as the sea coast, mountains, desert, savanna and tropical rainforest. In the west and northwest there is a volcanic mountain range with a volcano that is still active today. At 4,095 meters high, the Cameroon Mountain is also the highest peak in West Africa. While the interior is predominantly characterized by flat plateaus, the tropical rainforest covers the southern plateaus. Cameroon has a tropical climate with high temperatures. Over 15,500 species of butterflies, 166 different reptiles, 3 species of crocodile, 210 different frogs and 285 different mammals live on the national territory.

By far the two largest cities in Cameroon are the port city of Douala and the capital Yaounde. Other larger cities in the country are Bamenda, Garoua, Maroua, Bafoussam, Kousseri, Ngaoundere, Kumba and Loum. Around 72% of the population profess Christianity, 78% speak French as their native language and 22% speak English. Cameroon's main export goods are primarily petroleum, cocoa, coffee and wood products.

The political capital and second largest city of Cameroon is Yaounde with around 2.5 million inhabitants. The city is located at an altitude of 730 meters inland, around which gold and titanium are mined. The most important sights in Yaounde include the Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles, the former presidential palace, the Notre Dame Cathedral, the monument commemorating the reunification of English and French Cameroon in 1961, the Benedictine monastery with the Cameroonian Art Museum, the Central Market, the Mont Febe mountain with the best views of the city as well as the Congress Palace.

The largest city in Cameroon is the port city of Douala, about 24 km from the Atlantic, with around 2.9 million inhabitants. Douala is the country's economic metropolis and at the same time the financial, industrial, commercial and cultural center of Cameroon. The main production sectors in Douala are textiles, beer, soft drinks, aluminum products and the processing of wood and cocoa beans. The city's most important sights include the former royal palace "Pagoda", the Peter and Paul Cathedral, the Baptist church "Temple du Centenaire", the German Cemetery, the monument to King Akwa, the old German Post Office, and the Marine Museum , the Palace of Justice, the Municipal Museum, the German Sailors' Home and the German Cemetery.

As part of my Central Africa trip, I traveled to Cameroon several times in August 2017. For me, the airport in Douala was an important hub for other surrounding countries. I didn't like the city itself very much, there's actually far too much hustle and bustle and chaos there, typical of a big African city. After dark it was also not very advisable to go out on the street alone.
