Austria is a landlocked country in Central Europe with almost nine million inhabitants and one of the wealthiest countries in the European Union. The bordering states are Germany and the Czech Republic in the north, Slovenia and Italy in the south, Slovakia and Hungary in the east and Switzerland and Liechtenstein in the west.
Austria stretches a maximum of 575 kilometers from west to east and over 295 kilometers from north to south. About 62% of the national territory is mountainous, mainly through the Alps. At 3,798 meters, the Großglockner in the Hohe Tauern is the highest peak in the country. A large part of Austria is drained directly via the Danube to the Black Sea.
The mountain landscape is of great importance for tourism. There are several winter sports areas there that can also be used for mountain hiking and climbing in summer. The most famous Austrian ski areas are Sölden, the Kitzsteinhorn near Kaprun, the Pitztal with the Pitztal Glacier, Kitzbühel-Kirchberg, Mayrhofen in the Zillertal, Obergurgl-Hochgurgl and Saalbach Hinterglemm.
I personally went skiing there with friends at least once or twice every year in winter. Our favorite winter vacation spots were Ischgl, Mayrhofen and Sölden.
Austria is visited by around 32 million tourists every year.
The largest cities in the country include Vienna, Innsbruck, Graz, Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Salzburg, Bregenz, Linz, St. Pölten, Eisenstadt, Feldkirch, Dornbirn and Wels.
The official state language of the Republic of Austria is Austrian German, which is the mother tongue of around 90% of the population.
Austria is also world-famous for its composers of the classical and romantic eras, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Anton Brückner, Franz Liszt and Johann Strauss. Theater is also world-famous as an actual art form and is very well received in Austria, for example in the Vienna State Opera, at the Bregenz Festival, at the Salzburg Festival or at the Seespiele in Burgenland.
The federal capital of Austria is Vienna with almost 1.9 million inhabitants. Vienna, located on the Danube, is the most populous city in Austria, the second largest in the German-speaking area and the sixth largest city in the European Union. Vienna is considered a city with a very high quality of life and, according to a United Nations study in 2012, was considered the wealthiest city in the world. Vienna lies on the eastern edge of the Alps, at the transition to the foothills of the Alps in the east in a lowland.
The city of Vienna became known all over the world thanks to numerous magnificent buildings, an enormous cultural offering and the reputation it acquired as the secret music capital. Vienna is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The most visited sights in Vienna include St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Schönbrunn Palace and Zoo, the Belvedere, the Art History Museum, the Hofburg, the Albertina, the Ferris Wheel, the Museums Quartier, the Vienna City Hall, the horse-drawn carriages in the city center and Vienna's Old Town.
Through several visits over the last few years, I have been able to convince myself of the coziness and variety of options in the beautiful Alpine republic. Austria is a fantastic travel destination with many different destinations, excellent local cuisine and is therefore worth a visit at any time of the year.
