The U.S. Virgin Islands is a territory of the United States with a population of approximately 110,000. The archipelago is located east of Puerto Rico. They consist of the three main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas, with the capital Charlotte Amalie.
The landscape of all islands is mostly hilly, even partly mountainous. The highest point is Crown Mountain at 474 meters above sea level.
The islands have a consistently tropical climate, so the archipelago has been exposed to several tropical storms in recent years. Long periods of drought, floods or occasional earthquakes often occur. There is a fundamental lack of natural freshwater resources there.
The official language in the US Virgin Islands is English and the national currency is the US dollar. Since many immigrants from other Caribbean countries live on the archipelago, Spanish and French are also widely spoken. Life expectancy there, at just over 80 years, is one of the highest in the world.
The U.S. Virgin Islands are the only U.S. possession with left-hand traffic, a very interesting aspect. Saint Thomas has one of the best natural harbors in the entire Caribbean. There are also ports in Christiansted, Cruz Bay and Port Alucroix. In addition, three islands have a well-developed airport.
The basis of the economy of the US Virgin Islands is primarily tourism, which employs more than 75% of all residents. More than two million tourists visit the archipelago every year, mostly from mainland America.
The industrial sector consists primarily of petroleum refineries, the production of textiles, electronic goods or pharmaceutical products and the final assembly of watches.
Agriculture is rather insignificant on the archipelago, so most food has to be imported.
The most important sights in the US Virgin Islands include the “Fort Christiansvaern”, the botanical garden in St. Georges Village, the St. Thomas Synagogue, the Bajo El Sol Gallery, the “Skyline Drive” with the breathtaking view from above the Islands, Peace Hill Windmill, Virgin Islands National Park, Salt River Bay National Historic Park, Charlotte Amalie's 99 Stairs and Market Square, Blackbeard's Castle, Frederick Lutheran Church, Catherinberg Ruins, Government House, Bluebeards Tower, Main Street, the Clock Tower and the Waterfront Highway.
In July 2015 I spent a day in Charlotte Amalie on Saint Thomas, the capital of the US Virgin Islands. As part of my big Caribbean tour, I came by plane from Puerto Rico in the morning and then took the ferry to the British Virgin Islands in the evening.
Charlotte Amalie is an extremely beautiful and clean city. It is really very comfortable and relaxing to explore all the sights on foot. Due to the constant proximity to the water, a Caribbean flair naturally arises at all times. In the end it was a shame that after a wonderful day on Saint Thomas we had to continue again in the evening.
