Mauritius is an island nation around 1,800 kilometers southeast of the African continent with around 1.3 million inhabitants. The national territory includes the main island of Mauritius, Rodrigues Island, the Agalega Islands and the Cargados Carajos Islands. The main language spoken in Mauritius is French. The official national currency is the Mauritius rupee, with 1 euro equaling around 40 MUR.

The country's largest cities include Port Louis, Vacoas-Phoenix, Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, Triolet, Saint-Antoine, Bel Air, Bambous and Saint-Pierre.

The landscape in Mauritius is of volcanic origin. The highest mountain in the island chain is the Piton de la Petite Riviere Noire at 828 meters. Half of the residents are Hindu, plus 30% Christians and 20% Muslims.

Mauritius has one of the highest per capita incomes in Africa. There is a stable political situation and attracts a large number of foreign investors. A large part of the population works in agriculture and is mainly concerned with the cultivation of cane sugar. Another important industry is gemstone cutting.

However, the island state's most important source of income is tourism. Mauritius now attracts over 1.2 million visitors every year. The main tourist attractions include the many beautiful beaches, some spectacular waterfalls and the beautiful nature parks.

The main attractions of the main island are the Crystal Rock, the Notre Dame Auxiliatrice, Le Morne Brabant, Ganga Talao - Grand Bassin, the Maison Eureka, the Tamil Surya Oudaya Sangam Temple, the Martello Tower Museum, Seven Colored Earths, Pont Naturel, the International Slave Monument, the Albion Lighthouse, the Temple de Triolet and St. John's Church.

The capital of Mauritius and the country's largest city is Port Louis with around 160,000 inhabitants. Port Louis is the political, economic and cultural center of the island state.

The city's sights include the Citadel, the Blue Penny Museum - with the world-famous "Blue Mauritius", Chinatown, the Postal Museum, the Champs de Mars - the oldest horse racing track in the southern hemisphere, the Le Caudan Waterfront, the Jewish Cemetery, the Natural History Museum Museum, the East Indian Garden, the Minakshi Temple, the Theater, the tall State Bank Building, the Government House, the Skyline, the St. Louis Cathedral, the Jummah Mosque, the Botanical Garden and the Place d'Armes.

In September 2018 I visited the island of Mauritius for the first time for three days. I chose my hotel in Mahebourg near the airport. The hotel operator Ibrahim was super friendly, picked me up from the airport and organized my excursions for the next two days.

The island state has a lot to offer its visitors and the landscape is simply fantastic. While there is already annoyingly huge traffic in the capital Port Louis, things are fortunately a little quieter in the other places. Mauritius offers picturesque beaches and unique nature. My two day trips across the entire island were simply awesome, eventful and exciting.

In any case, I can only recommend this holiday island.
